A view from 1939:
COLUMBUS, (3,624 alt., 835 pop.), seat
of Stillwater County, began as a stage station on the Yellowstone
Trail. Lying between the large sheep and cattle ranches
to the south, and the wheat farms to the north, it developed
as a trade center and snipping point. This is the railroad station nearest to a comparatively uncommercialized
mountain recreational region on the headwaters of the Stillwater
River.
